You may notice that's Brandon Graham and this is a photo from 2009, but Jibreel Black, the new #55 was looking pretty Brandon Graham-ish on Saturday. |
I decided it would be a good idea to start breaking these game reviews down into offense and defense. They were getting pretty long. Not too much to talk about here. As I pointed out yesterday, EMU killed Michigan running the ball in the 1st quarter, averaging 5.9 YPC on 20 carries. But the defense held them to 3.1 YPC on 26 carries over the rest of the game. In fact that 5.9 YPC was largely built on the first 10 carries of the game when EMU had rushes of (in order) 13, 6, 3, 19, 10, 18, 8, -3, 4, 14. That's a 9.2 YPC average over the first 10 carries of the game. The last 10 carries of the first quarter went 4, 1, 1, 0, 5, 1, 7, 3, 2, 2, for 2.6 YPC. Outside of the first 10 carries of the game Michigan gave up 2.9 YPC. I don't think the rush defense should be a huge cause for concern based on this game. The ND game on the other hand.......
Anyway, on with the defense.

Pressure numbers include sacks as well. The passes targeted/completed against are obviously not complete. I only included plays I could be relatively sure who was in coverage or who should have had the zone. Some plays have three guys around one receiver, and I don't want to blame one specific player if I'm unsure. Obviously this left out a decent number of plays. Hopefully as time goes on I'll get better at determining who was the guilty party.
EMU didn't throw much so there's not much change to the numbers this week. Overall Avery has the worst completion percentage against in the secondary at 57% That's still not too bad and seems to be kind of another sign that Tony Gibson was a completely terrible coach. Thomas Gordon is only giving up a 44.4% completion percentage against and looks like he could be really good at SS. Jordan Kovacs has also played extremely well and it looks like Michigan might actually have a good safety duo for the first time in a long time.

I'm liking the limited looks we've had at Frank Clark. He looks bigger than his listed weight and he's not only made some nice plays on special teams but made a couple nice plays against the run this week and had a nice pass rush or two. Actually all the defensive ends showed up this week. Craig Roh finally did something and Jibreel Black looked a little like another #55 out there.
The LB's had a tough day. Hawthorne does some great things, really attacking the play. And then he does some really bad things too, which is what you'd expect from a young player. Kenny Demens is solid but unspectacular. Jake Ryan probably needs to play a little more under control, but he's a playmaker as well.
