Draft Analysis- Week One

I'll start with a few caveats.  While some of the points here are overall impressions of an entire career, the basis of  these reports will be from each individual week of play.  The draft round/grade is for an entire career.  I`m only doing seniors at this point, no juniors included.  Only starters will be included.  Troy Woolfolk didn't play enough, but will likely be added next week.  Brandon Herron will also likely be added next week.  Honestly I left out Mark Huyge for this week simply because I have some trouble evaluating the offensive tackle position.  He'll also likely be included next week.

As a final note, I'll hopefully be including picture pages of some of the stuff I'm talking about and video as well.  I just got crunched for time this week.

David Molk, center: undersized technician at center....excellent in pass protection....did not always get great push at first level in run game, but always seemed to wall his man off...excellent in zone blocking scheme...showed good initial punch to shock defenders....used hands exceptionally well to control defenders....defenders did not escape once he latched on....excellent footwork....able to slide step to wall of his man easily....understands blocking angles very well....plays with a mean streak....excellent leader and a smart player, typical of the center position....displayed good athleticism but missed some second level blocks....injury history....the Big 10 has some excellent center prospects, but Molk is one of the top senior centers in the country....likely selected early by a zone blocking team....size will keep him from being drafted as early as recent top centers
Projected draft position: 2nd-3rd round
Stock: No change

Mike Martin, defensive tackle: displayed good initial punch....active hands with good hand placement....understands leverage....held up well to double teams at the point....active high motor player....always pursuing the ball....strength is a major plus....against single blocking often pushed his man into the backfield, but was negated by quick passing game and runs away from him....displays good footwork....plays angry....a fiery player....good athleticism for the position....struggled to split double teams in passing game....did not get penetration regularly, something we`re used to seeing....will often try to shoot the gap off the snap which can lead to feast or famine, with Martin splitting the center/guard and roaring into the backfield, or getting washed down the line....a perfect 3 tech in an NFL 4-3 which may hurt him in the draft, as teams have little tape on him at the position....lacks scheme versatility....basically locked into being drafted as a 4-3 3 tech, which will push him down some boards
Projected draft position: 2nd-3rd round
Stock: No change

Ryan Van Bergen, defensive end/defensive tackle: great run defender, regardless of position....uses his hands well....good size and strength for defensive end position....showed some athleticism rushing from a two point stance....plays with good leverage on most plays....not an elite pass rusher....probably too tall for DT at the next level....will let defenders into his body at times....just an average athlete for the position....scheme diverse, as he could play DE in a 3-4 or be a 2 down SDE in a 4-3....probably compares to Will Johnson, although more athletic and a better overall player....the type of player that will work his way into starting lineup for a team, but team will always be looking to replace him with better pass rusher, then wonder why their run defense dropped 10 spots in rankings once he's gone
Projected draft position: late round-undrafted free agent
Stock: No change

Michael Shaw, running back: displays good speed....excellent burst through the hole....will take on tacklers....adequate blocker....has shown good hands as receiver out of the backfield....undersized to be an every down back....has poor vision....has trouble breaking tackles at the first level....injury history....a 3rd down/change of pace RB at the next level
Projected draft position: late round-UDFA
Stock: No change

Kevin Koger, tight end/H-back: adequate in-line blocker, but better in space....showed great hands to go up and get a high throw and then hang on after a big hit....however can lose concentration and has had drops in the past....has great athleticism for the TE position....perfect fit in an H-back role....if he can showcase talent this year could fly up draft boards
Projected draft position: late round-UDFA
Stock: No change

Junior Hemingway, wide receiver: not much here with only one catch....excellent example of ability to go up and get the ball....missed some blocks in the run game....has poor speed for the position....despite lack of speed, displays great ability to get yards after the catch....will drop the occasional ball....injury history....could have a big year and push himself up draft boards....lack of speed will keep him from going too high....reminds me of a poor mans Anquan Boldin
Projected draft position: late round-UDFA
Stock: No change
